BRAVEHEART/ Goliath
Meet Braveheart, a 2 yr old male Rottweiler tripod. Braveheart is Heartworm
positive also and will start treatment soon. A huge thanks for the Vets & techs
that saved this boy, Arfn’s rescue who initially contacted SSRR regarding
this boy, SSRR Coordinators & volunteers who performed the evaluation
and stepped up to foster this boy!
Warning- Graphic story to follow
Braveheart was allegedly attacked by 2 other dogs. The "owner" allowed
this poor dog to lay in the biggest rain storm overnight in the cold. They
said they couldn't pick him up. By the time they got him to the vet the
flesh around the wounds was necrotic and he had maggots in them. Not an
overnight result for sure.
The vets made heroic efforts, but were unable to save one of his front
legs. The other one had bite out of it exposing the bone. It was about the
size of a tomato. The poor baby was lying on his side, unable to move and
no doubt in terrible pain, even tho they kept his very sedated with pain
meds after his surgery.
After about 2 weeks the "owner" took him home. They put him in
the back of the pickup and of course he was unsteady on his new 3 legs.
He fell out of the pickup onto the side of the road. At that point, the
owners just wanted him put to sleep!
The vets agreed to keep him there during the week and one of the vet techs
takes him home on weekends to care for him and help him rehab.
From rescuer: He makes noises like he is talking to you and is sooooo grateful
and affectionate. He melts my heart and I have promised to get this big
brave boy a home that will love and appreciate him. He is house broken and
he is mending well.
The girls call him "Monster" because he is big
Evaluation by our SSRR volunteer who performed the Temperament test (April
08’):
Very sweet boy--big leaner. He is not mobile enough yet to attempt to do
the leash or resource guarding exercises, however, his caregiver reports
that he has responded well to her 3 dogs when she takes him home over the
weekend, and one of her dogs is a strong alpha. She also reports that he
is finally eating instead of just inhaling his food. No problems with food
guarding have been noticed.
The amputation is still too new for him to be comfortable--the
stump is still very raw with bone and muscle visible. He still moves the
stump and is not at all steady on his feet yet. He does move around, however,
and is housebroken. He is very, very vocal--grumbles, purrs, all those rottie
noises that freak the general public out. I believe that this dog is quite
well bred. One ear is injured and healing so I didn't try to handle it,
but he submits to handling on the other ear without a peep His vertebra
are still obvious and he needs some weight still. His front leg is still
healing and still looks nasty, even after all this time..
