Braveheart

BRAVEHEART/ Goliath

Meet Braveheart, a 2 yr old male Rottweiler tripod. Braveheart is Heartworm positive also and will start treatment soon. A huge thanks for the Vets & techs that saved this boy, Arfn’s rescue who initially contacted SSRR regarding this boy, SSRR Coordinators & volunteers who performed the evaluation and stepped up to foster this boy!

Warning- Graphic story to follow

Braveheart was allegedly attacked by 2 other dogs. The "owner" allowed this poor dog to lay in the biggest rain storm overnight in the cold. They said they couldn't pick him up. By the time they got him to the vet the flesh around the wounds was necrotic and he had maggots in them. Not an overnight result for sure.

The vets made heroic efforts, but were unable to save one of his front legs. The other one had bite out of it exposing the bone. It was about the size of a tomato. The poor baby was lying on his side, unable to move and no doubt in terrible pain, even tho they kept his very sedated with pain meds after his surgery.

After about 2 weeks the "owner" took him home. They put him in the back of the pickup and of course he was unsteady on his new 3 legs. He fell out of the pickup onto the side of the road. At that point, the owners just wanted him put to sleep!

The vets agreed to keep him there during the week and one of the vet techs takes him home on weekends to care for him and help him rehab.

From rescuer: He makes noises like he is talking to you and is sooooo grateful and affectionate. He melts my heart and I have promised to get this big brave boy a home that will love and appreciate him. He is house broken and he is mending well.
The girls call him "Monster" because he is big

Evaluation by our SSRR volunteer who performed the Temperament test (April 08’):

Very sweet boy--big leaner. He is not mobile enough yet to attempt to do the leash or resource guarding exercises, however, his caregiver reports that he has responded well to her 3 dogs when she takes him home over the weekend, and one of her dogs is a strong alpha. She also reports that he is finally eating instead of just inhaling his food. No problems with food guarding have been noticed.
The amputation is still too new for him to be comfortable--the stump is still very raw with bone and muscle visible. He still moves the stump and is not at all steady on his feet yet. He does move around, however, and is housebroken. He is very, very vocal--grumbles, purrs, all those rottie noises that freak the general public out. I believe that this dog is quite well bred. One ear is injured and healing so I didn't try to handle it, but he submits to handling on the other ear without a peep His vertebra are still obvious and he needs some weight still. His front leg is still healing and still looks nasty, even after all this time..

Gigi (Adoption Pending) 7 16 08

It is said that bad things happen to good dogs and Gigi is a perfect example of that! Gigi is a very young girl, no more than a year old. Rescue received a call about a Rottweiler that was found, full of ticks and fleas, skin and bones and limping very badly. How could we ignore a plea for help like that? That's when Sue (now Gigi's Foster Mom) stepped up ready to help and offered to foster Gigi! SSRR approved Intake as Gigi has an excellent Temperament and is a sweet girl!

FROM Gigi's Foster Mom: "Upon meeting Gigi she felt offering me her rawhide was the hospitable thing to do, even though she was starving, she wanted to make friends anyway she knew how. Gigi wants to make friends with everyone she meets which also includes all of the animals in her foster home, a male and female Rottweiler, the dachshunds and the cats!"

The bad news is Gigi was hit by a car and suffered severe trauma to her rear right hip. Her doctor recommends Hip Replacement so she will grow up and live a normal life. There are other options but her quality of life will not be the same. The difference in cost is about $1,000 but like the other Special Needs dogs, Gigi is worth every penny. She wants to run and play with the other dogs but important she wants a family that will love her and care for her ensuring she never ends up abandoned, hungry and injured again.  PLEASE help us to help Gigi!

Beau

Meet Beau. He was just recently rescued from a Kill Shelter in San Antonio, TX. Beau is a 3-4 yr old Rottweiler who has just tested HIGH POSITIVE for heartworms! AT this time, we are hoping his heart isn't damaged from the heartworms. He is safe now - at the Vet's office and is heading to his new foster home.

Update:  14 Apr 07.  Beau is having a rough time right now after his first heartworm treatment and the vet has found that his kidney enzymes are not good; he requires a heart ultrasound which is NOT a cheap procedure. Everyone please pray for Beau! He needs all he can get right now!

Duke

This is Duke, our newest rescue! He was rescued out of a gas "kill" shelter in GA. He has severe eye problems and is HW positive. Duke's vet bills will be quite high but I know this boy is worth it; he has a temperament of a teddy bear "

3/16/07 Update: Murphy had his Entropion surgery a few weeks ago... It went VERY well. Stitches are out now. He is looking great and boy is he really pleased with his new pain free eyes!!  He's was neutered at the same time as doing his eyes.  Duke aka Murphy has just begun HW treatment this past Monday. He'll go in for a check up this week. Then next round of treatment in 3 wks (4 weeks after first treatment). So far doing very well. We've had no coughing or breathing issues

Sidney

Sidney is approximately 2 - 2 1/2 years old.  She was adopted as a pup, and her adopters knew that she was hearing impaired.  Unfortunately, their personal situation has changed and they were forced to return Sidney to our care.  She is in a wonderful, loving foster home- however, she will require some special training to respond to hand signals.  She does hear some tones.  A group of professional trainers have offered up their services; however, this may be a lengthy program for Sidney.  We want her to be all she can be so that she'll make someone an excellent companion- please help Sidney learn the advanced skills she will need to be our new ambassador.

Recently adopted by her foster mom!

Gambit

My name is Gambit and I was picked up in Louisiana by animal control after being found abandoned. My age is estimated to be between one and two years of age. I was severely underweight when I was taken into a SSRR foster home in Texas and it was discovered that I have heartworms as well. The vet that took the x-ray of my chest said that my heart is enlarged and I have a severe case of heartworm infestation. It was determined that it was too dangerous to do the single treatment for heartworms. I just had my first shot and will have to go back in a month for the second shot of medicine so that I can get well. After I get my treatments I should go on to live a long, healthy life. Please help with my medical expenses if you can and keep me in your thoughts while I undergo my medical treatment. Also, if you have dogs don’t forget to protect them by giving them the proper heartworm treatment .
